Users shared mac os x

This feature is particularly useful for Mac administrators at schools who want to make files available to all students in a classroom that might be using the same Mac.

On the other hand, the usefulness of this feature can span to families who have multiple user accounts on their Macs at home too, such as allowing a child to share their homework with their parents for them to double-check, or for siblings who may be sharing different kinds of files among each other. Other OS X users can do the same steps outlined above to share files with you, the Mac administrator, or with other standard users on the computer.

How to share files and documents between users of a same Mac

Why pay for a USB flash drive to transfer files between users when your Mac already comes with file-transferring capabilities? About every week some of the files become read-only for some of the users. Permissions are designed to compartmentalize users and prevent non-privileged users from accessing administrative functions. Apple adds extended file attributes on top of this that can be used by apps or the system.

However, it requires a bit more system-administration knowledge. You can disable file-server types to prevent the potential of multiple instances of the same server appearing as an option.

You should no longer see two servers. If you find that some older Macs can no longer connect to the server, you may need to re-enable AFP, even with the duplicate servers appearing.

With the folder moved to this location, click the Change button next to the media folder path in iTunes, and select the media folder in its new location. Update the iTunes preferences similarly for other accounts, and now all should use the same iTunes folder.

Why read/write permissions go awry with macOS File Sharing

Keep in mind that iTunes may report some songs missing for some user accounts after changing their iTunes media locations, so in these cases you will have to re-import the songs by dragging them from these accounts' old media folders to the iTunes window or to the new media folder.

Alternatively you can manually drag the contents of each user's old iTunes Media folder to the new one, to consolidate it in this new location you will have to manually manage duplicate files when doing this. A second approach to this is to decentralize your iTunes media folders, so you can maintain a separate private music collection, but also include music files from public folders, external drives, and other commonly accessible folders.

To do this, instead of changing your iTunes Media folder location, leave it as-is and uncheck the option to "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library file" that is located under the media folder path.

With this setting unchecked, new songs you import from CDs or download from iTunes will be placed in your private collection in your user account; however, you can also drag a music collection folder from a shared drive to your iTunes window, and iTunes will add the files to your library but keep them in their current location instead of copying them to your private collection.
